ROADSIDE RUNWAY
The women in Paje fashion themselves in Kitenge with beautiful colors and varying geometric patterns that dance in the warm breeze and draw the affection of searching eyes. When I came to this beach town I was searching for something. I did not know in what form it would come, yet I knew that it would find me first. I was looking for art; and it is art that finds the artist, hardly the other way around. I was searching for a thing that would announce itself to me with elegance and innovation, evident in its presence when I saw it. I found artistry in the women who style their kitenge so beautifully. Carrying heavy bags or to-do lists, robed in sweet and bold and personalized textile combinations that formed a tapestry of love to Zanzibar.
So my love of Zanzibar grew in this way, as I realized the roadside runway.
